Rare Real Photo Postcard, Barbecue under the Oaks, Carville, Louisiana
Postcard depicts a large group of African Americans standing in line for a barbecue under the oak trees.
The photo probably dates from the 1950 or 1960’s based on the bicycle. folding chairs and clothing.
I am positive that the photo was taken on the grounds of the leprosarium in Carville. Louisiana. Individuals with Leprosy or Hansen’s disease were confined there until a cure was found.
You can see a bicycle, a man in a wheelchair and some people sitting on what appears to be a Cushman scooter. (google Elizabeth Schexnyder's podcast at hrsa.gov for info about patient's lives at the leprosarium).
The crowd looks predominantly African American. Some of the people serving the barbecue look like they might be nuns based on their headgear.
The postcard is a rare historical artifact and document of America's past.
